چکیده

Current processors are based on a multithreaded architecture. Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) techniques are used to increase instruction throughput under a multiprogramming workload; however, it does not improve performance when only a single thread is executing. This communication explores Speculative Precomputation, a technique that uses idle thread contexts in a multithreaded architecture to improve the performance of singlethreaded applications. It reduces program stalls, generated by data cache misses, using available thread contexts to prefetch these data. Speculative Precomputation tasks are described, and the examination of basic triggers and chaining triggers are made, using a Intel Itanium ISA processor as the evaluation base.

Memory Latency-Tolerance Approaches for Itanium Processors: Out-of-Order Execution vs. Speculative Precomputation

The performance of in-order execution ItaniumTM processors can suffer significantly due to cache misses. Two memory latency tolerance approaches can be applied for the Itanium processors. One uses an out-of-order (OOO) execution core; the other assumes multithreading support and exploits cache prefetching via speculative precomputation (SP). This paper evaluates and contrasts these two approach...

smt- SPRINTS: Software Precomputation with Intelligent Streaming for Resource-Constrained SMTs

We present SPRINTS, a source-level speculative precomputation framework for scientific applications running on SMTs with two execution contexts. Our framework targets memory-bound applications and reduces memory latency by prefetching long streams of delinquent data accesses. A unique aspect of SPRINTS is that it requires neither hardware nor compiler support. It is based on partial cache simul...

Speculative Precomputation on Chip Multiprocessors

Previous work on speculative precomputation (SP) on simultaneous multithreaded (SMT) architectures has shown significant benefits. The SP techniques improve singlethreaded program performance by utilizing otherwise idle thread contexts to run “helper threads”, which prefetch critical data into shared caches and reduce the time the “main thread” stalls waiting for long latency outstanding loads....

Speculative Precomputation: Exploring the Use of Multithreading for Latency

Speculative Precomputation (SP) is a technique to improve the latency of single-threaded applications by utilizing idle multithreading hardware resources to perform aggressive long-range data prefetches. Instead of trying to explicitly parallelize a single-threaded application, SP does the following: • Targets only a small set of static load instructions, called delinquent loads, which incur th...

Exploring the Capacity of a Modern SMT Architecture to Deliver High Scientific Application Performance

Simultaneous multithreading (SMT) has been proposed to improve system throughput by overlapping instructions from multiple threads on a single wide-issue processor. Recent studies have demonstrated that heterogeneity of simultaneously executed applications can bring up significant performance gains due to SMT. However, the speedup of a single application that is parallelized into multiple threa...
